Portland Wheelers is humbled by the gift of a Van Raam Fun2Go side-by-side trike from Scott and Alice Hamilton, in memory of Scott’s mother, Ellie.
Ellie passed away in March 2026. She was a dedicated Registered Nurse and the former Director of Nursing at Seaside Nursing Home in Portland. As a result, she possessed a deep professional understanding of how much joy and connection a simple cycle ride could bring to those in long-term care. Scott says, “After I joined Portland Wheelers as a volunteer in 2024, our frequent phone calls became a way for her to stay connected to the work; she would always eagerly ask about my experiences as a pilot—who I had the pleasure of riding with, what they were like, and what their personal stories were. Though she never had the opportunity to experience a ride firsthand, she was a passionate advocate for the organization and frequently expressed her wish that such a service had been available to the residents she cared for during her career. We feel that supporting this wonderful program in her memory is a fitting tribute to her lifelong dedication to the well-being of others and her enthusiasm for the meaningful impact of your work.”
We had the great pleasure of meeting Scott and Alice at Back Cove in Portland for the trike’s first ride. “Seeing the joy and the laughs that the Fun2Go brought them as soon as they started pedaling was everything,” said Executive Director Pete Ryan. “That is exactly the feeling that this incredible gift will bring to so many people for a long time. I’m just so excited for Portland Wheelers to offer active participation options for those who wish to either do just a little pedaling or take full control over their ride. This trike, the Ellie Hamilton, continues to push us toward the idea that Biking is for EveryBODY.”
